Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin officially welcomed delegates from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the South Palms Hotel for the Special Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (Special SOME) and Associated Meetings. The event marks a significant milestone in the Philippines’ 2026 ASEAN Chairship, centered on the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
Against the scenic coastal backdrop of Panglao, the welcome dinner served as a platform to foster trust and shared dedication toward a secure, sustainable, and resilient energy landscape for the region. Secretary Garin emphasized that Bohol’s historical role as a hub for early diplomacy makes it the ideal setting for modern regional cooperation.
During her remarks, Secretary Garin highlighted that the Special SOME is focused on moving beyond policy discussions to achieve tangible results for the ASEAN community. Key priorities include:
-
Expanding energy access across Southeast Asia.
-
Protecting consumers from market volatility.
-
Creating green jobs within the energy sector.
-
Strengthening system reliability to ensure regional energy security.
The event underscored the synergy between local and national leadership, with Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle “Aris” Aumentado and Mayor Edgardo “Boy” Arcay in attendance. Their presence reinforced Bohol’s readiness to support the Philippines’ 2026 Chairship and showcased the province as a premier destination for international diplomacy.
The evening featured a vibrant cultural program, highlighting the rich heritage of the Philippines through:
-
Traditional dances by the Kasing-Sining Collective.
-
Instrumental arrangements from the Dimiao Children’s Rondalla.
-
Vocal performances by Hannah Precillas, Lumad Lobocanon Music and Me, and the world-renowned Loboc Children’s Choir.
-
A captivating performance by Bohol’s local fire dancers.
On January 22, 2026, delegates participated in “Handumanan: A Heritage Tour of Bohol.” The tour provided international officials an immersive experience of the province’s historical landmarks and cultural legacy, further deepening the spirit of ASEAN solidarity.
As the Philippines leads the energy transition dialogue this year, the Special SOME stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to hosting with purpose, heart, and a unified vision for a cleaner, more integrated Southeast Asia.
