In a landmark ceremony on Wednesday at Malacañang Palace, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. officially administered the oath of office to Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., appointing him as the 32nd Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The ceremony coincided with Nartatez’s promotion to the prestigious rank of four-star general, the highest grade in the police service. President Marcos Jr. expressed his full confidence in PGen Nartatez’s leadership, citing his proven track record of operational excellence and his “unwavering commitment to the rule of law.”
Upon assuming command, PGen Nartatez unveiled his “PNP Focused Agenda,” a strategic roadmap designed to modernize the police force while deepening its connection with the Filipino people. This five-pillar framework aims to transform the organization into a more agile and transparent institution:
-
Effective Resource Management: Streamlining the procurement and allocation of assets to ensure every peso serves the frontlines.
-
Enhanced Police Operations: Utilizing data-driven strategies and modern technology to preemptively combat crime and ensure rapid response times.
-
Integrity Monitoring & Accountability: Strengthening internal cleansing efforts to uphold the highest ethical standards and root out misconduct.
-
Personnel Morale and Welfare: Prioritizing the mental health, career development, and social security of the 232,000-strong police force.
-
Strengthened Community Partnerships: Building a “bridge of trust” between officers and the neighborhoods they serve through proactive engagement and transparency.
In his inaugural address, PGen Nartatez emphasized that the PNP’s strength lies not just in its tactical capabilities, but in its relationship with the public. “Our badge is a symbol of the people’s trust,” said PGen Nartatez. “Under my leadership, the PNP will remain professional, responsive, and—above all—people-centered. We will be relentless against crime, but we will be equally dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of every Filipino.”
The transition comes at a pivotal time as the PNP continues to pivot toward digital transformation and intensified anti-insurgency and anti-illegal drug operations within the bounds of human rights.
PGen Nartatez succeeds the outgoing chief, bringing decades of experience in field command and administrative leadership to the post.
