Austria and PH strengthen agricultural ties through new trade milestones and infrastructure innovation

In a significant move to bolster international trade and food security, Austrian Ambassador Johann Brieger and Commercial Counsellor Arnulf Gressel met with Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. to formalize and expand upon recent breakthroughs in the Austria-Philippines agricultural partnership.

The dialogue centered on a multifaceted approach to agricultural growth, combining streamlined trade protocols, sustainable technology transfers, and strategic financial backing.

  • System Accreditation for Meat Exports: Ambassador Brieger expressed his gratitude to the Department of Agriculture for the recently granted system accreditation of Austria’s foreign meat establishments. This milestone simplifies the export process, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality Austrian meat products to the Philippine market.

  • Strategic Financing: The officials discussed the utilization of available Austrian financing under the existing MOU on Financial Cooperation. This framework provides the Philippines with accessible funding to support large-scale agricultural modernization projects.

  • Infrastructure & Farm-to-Market Connectivity: Recognizing that production is only half the battle, the discussions highlighted the expertise of MCE GMBH. The firm specializes in advanced bridge construction, a critical component for enhancing the Philippines’ farm-to-market road networks and reducing post-harvest losses.

  • Precision Irrigation for Climate Resilience: To address the challenges of unpredictable weather patterns, the Bauer Group presented its comprehensive irrigation solutions. Their technology is designed for “any terrain” application, ensuring precise water delivery that maximizes crop yields while conserving vital resources.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment to building a more efficient and sustainable food supply chain. By integrating Austrian technical “know-how” with the Philippines’ agricultural potential, both nations aim to foster an environment where technology and trade drive economic stability.

“With new meat establishment accreditations now in place and a focus on sustainable technology and financial cooperation, we are paving the way for a stronger, more efficient food supply chain between our nations,” stated Ambassador Brieger.

Secretary Tiu Laurel, Jr. reaffirmed the Department’s interest in leveraging these international partnerships to modernize the Filipino agricultural sector, ensuring that local farmers benefit from global innovations in irrigation and logistics.
