PH and Canada strengthen bilateral ties to boost tourism, trade, and development

The Philippines and Canada are moving toward a deeper, more robust partnership as the Department of Tourism (DOT) advances strategic efforts to enhance people-to-people exchanges, stimulate bilateral travel, and unlock new economic opportunities between the two nations.

Under the leadership of Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay, the DOT recently spearheaded high-level discussions with key Canadian officials to sustain and elevate the Philippines’ international tourism footprint.

On May 6, 2026, Secretary Angara-Mathay and DOT officials met with the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency David Hartman. The productive dialogue centered on developing targeted initiatives to drive mutual travel, foster cultural exchanges, and build resilient tourism linkages.

Expanding on this momentum, the DOT hosted a bilateral meeting on May 13, 2026, with a high-profile Canadian delegation led by the Honorable Rechie Valdez, Canada’s Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism.

During the session, both nations reaffirmed the vital role of tourism as a cornerstone for economic growth and cross-cultural understanding. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of international cooperation, the discussions successfully expanded beyond tourism to explore collaborative opportunities in agriculture, trade, and science-based innovations. Both sides strongly emphasized that future development must be matched with a steadfast commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability.

The Philippines remains highly optimistic about welcoming an increasing number of Canadian travelers in the coming years. Canada has firmly established itself as a vital pillar of the Philippine tourism industry, ranking as the country’s fifth top source market for international visitor arrivals in 2025.

Through these continuous and elevated engagements, both the Philippines and Canada reaffirm their shared vision of a progressive, sustainable, and mutually beneficial partnership.
