MARINA champions gender inclusivity, partners with WIMAPHIL to advance women’s leadership in maritime sector

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), in strategic partnership with Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL), hosted the International Day for Women in Maritime Forum recently at the Manila Prince Hotel.

The event brought together a diverse assembly of maritime professionals, government officials, and industry stakeholders to champion gender inclusivity and accelerate women’s empowerment across the sector.

Under the timely theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence,” the forum served as a critical platform to recognize the expanding role of women in shaping a more resilient and sustainable maritime future.

MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan led the agency’s delegation, emphasizing that fostering inclusive workforce practices is not just a regulatory goal, but a prerequisite for true industry excellence.

“Women are vital pillars in strengthening our maritime workforce and driving the positive transformations necessary for our industry to thrive globally,” said Administrator Malaluan. “MARINA remains steadfast in supporting progressive policies and institutional programs that guarantee equal opportunities, robust leadership development, and increased participation for female maritime professionals.”

Key highlights of the forum:
  • Women Leaders Panel: Prominent figures explored practical strategies for gender mainstreaming, breaking down systemic barriers, and implementing inclusive workplace practices across diverse maritime sub-sectors.

  • Industry-Wide Insights: Leaders from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), commercial shipping, maritime academe, and the manning sector shared firsthand insights on how women are driving innovation in operations, maritime security, education, and policy-making.

  • Solemn Oath-Taking Ceremony: Women leaders and key stakeholders participated in a ceremonial oath, formally solidifying their shared accountability toward building an equitable, progressive, and modern maritime ecosystem.

The forum concluded with a unified call to action supported by representatives from maritime training centers, schools, and manning agencies. By bridging the gap between high-level policy and daily operational practice, MARINA and WIMAPHIL continue to lay the groundwork for a more competitive, diverse, and sustainable global maritime industry.
