Free maritime training for Filipino Seafarers starts August 2026

In a major boost to the country’s maritime workforce, the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) has announced that it will begin offering free regular training courses to Filipino seafarers starting August 3, 2026.

The landmark initiative, introduced during the celebration of the International Day of the Seafarer, serves as a government recognition of the vital contributions that Filipino mariners make to the global shipping industry and the national economy.

As the country’s only government-operated maritime training institution, the NMP is waiving fees to reduce the financial burden on both aspiring and active seafarers. The program structure includes:

  • 100% Free Courses: Covers all Regular Training Courses, including STCW full courses, refresher courses, and management-level courses required for international compliance.

  • Subsidized Courses: Professional Development Courses (PDC) will remain available but will be offered at significantly reduced and affordable rates.

By removing financial barriers to mandatory maritime education, the government aims to enhance the skills, support the professional development, and secure the career advancement of Filipino seafarers in a highly competitive international market.

“This initiative is expected to improve access to essential maritime education, ensuring our seafarers remain compliant with strict international standards while opening up greater opportunities for global employment,” said the National Maritime Polytechnic.

Interested seafarers are encouraged to contact the National Maritime Polytechnic or visit their official channels for enrollment procedures and course schedules ahead of the August launch.

The National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) is the sole government-owned maritime training and research institution in the Philippines, dedicated to providing high-quality, globally compliant education and training for Filipino maritime professionals.
