LAPU-LAPU CITY, CEBU – Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has achieved Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International in Asia-Pacific and Middle East (ACI APAC & MID). With this milestone, MCIA marks as the first and only airport in the Philippines to reach Level 2 airport carbon accreditation.
Building on its legacy as a sustainable airport in the country,, this accreditation recognizes MCIA’s completion of a verified greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and its successful implementation of effective carbon management strategies that successfully reduced carbon intensity per traffic unit (passenger movement and cargo tonnage).

Following its identification of emission sources, this Level 2 accreditation rein
forces the implementation of emission reduction measures such as energy efficiency opportunities through the building management system (BMS), harnessing its 1.64 MWp rooftop solar power, utilization of smart sensors, implementation of monitoring and maintenance protocols to improve HVAC, monitoring fuel consumption of vehicle and equipment to match usage efficiency, and conversion to LED lighting.

Under its updated Carbon Management Plan, MCIA has set an ambitious target to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission intensity by over 90% by 2029 compared to its baseline levels, supporting its long-term commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
MCIA consistently invests in green infrastructure and collaborative carbon management while enhancing passenger experience through its vital environmental stewardship. In 2024, MCIA launched the utilization of a bridge mounted equipment (BME) providing parked aircraft with electricity and cabin cooling without burning jet fuel. In 2025, airlines operating at MCIA have also started using full electric ground support equipment (eGSE) and the practice of Single-Engine Taxi-In (SETI) procedures to reduce fuel consumption during ground operations. As MCIA continues its journey toward a net-zero future, this ACA Level 2 accreditation reinforces its position as a pioneering force in sustainable Philippine aviation.
