In a decisive move to ensure passenger comfort and safety during the heightened travel period for the May 12 elections, the Land Transportation Office (LTO), under the directives of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. and Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon, will recommend sanctions against three bus companies operating in Cubao, Quezon City.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II conducted surprise roadworthiness inspections on Saturday, May 10, revealing significant deficiencies in the passenger facilities of Mark Eve’s Transit, Elavil, and Eagle Star bus companies.
While the companies were found to be compliant with road safety regulations, Asec. Mendoza expressed deep concern over the substandard conditions of their terminals, particularly the inadequate comfort rooms and overall passenger convenience.
“Passengers are the lifeblood of PUV operation, thus, they must treat them well, including good maintenance of their facilities. “From what I saw during my inspection, you’ll be amazed, especially when you see their comfort rooms,” said Asec. Mendoza highlighted his disappointment with the observed conditions.
During the inspections, Asec. Mendoza personally assessed the tires and maintenance records of the buses to ensure compliance with road safety standards. However, the subpar passenger facilities prompted him to take immediate action.
“I will personally report this to our DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon and our LTFRB Chair, Teofilo Guadiz III, for immediate action,” stated Asec. Mendoza, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
This action follows the earlier order by LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III to close seven bus terminals in Pasay City due to similar passenger convenience issues, including inadequate facilities and non-submission of required compliance documents.
Asec. Mendoza has also directed all LTO Regional Directors to intensify road safety inspections at bus and other Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) terminals nationwide, as millions of Filipinos travel to their home provinces for the elections.
