DOT and Liga ng mga Barangay forge partnership to empower local tourism through interactive map

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the National Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas are set to collaborate on developing an interactive Philippine Map for the Liga’s website, aiming to boost grassroots tourism and economic development. The initiative was discussed during a meeting held at the DOT Central Office in Makati City on Wednesday, May 14, led by DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and executives of the Liga.

Maria Katrina Jessica Dy, National President of the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, emphasized the project’s core objective: to elevate the value of barangays by specifically highlighting their unique tourist destinations and attractions. This strategic move aims to directly benefit local communities by driving tourism and fostering economic growth at the village level.

Secretary Frasco warmly received the Liga delegation, underscoring the DOT’s commitment to equitable tourism development across all regions of the Philippines. “The importance of barangays cannot be overemphasized,” Secretary Frasco stated, drawing upon her experience as a former mayor. “There are many assets within our villages that remain undiscovered. Our goal at the Department of Tourism extends beyond simply promoting well-known destinations; we are dedicated to ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach every corner of the country.”

During the meeting, Secretary Frasco offered valuable insights and suggestions for the interactive map project. She also highlighted the DOT’s existing Travel Philippines application, developed by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines.

This comprehensive app provides travelers with up-to-date information on Philippine destinations and travel planning assistance. Secretary Frasco noted the app’s recent enhancements, which include a Japanese translation, ratings and reviews, profile management, a “near me” geo-targeting feature, travel updates, a search function, a directory of DOT-accredited tour guides, a media center, a list of partners, local government unit (LGU) contact information, and special deals and promotions.

Other key figures present at the meeting included Danielle Nuesa, Deputy Executive Director of the National Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas; Alex Gallegos, Creative Head; Kyla Galvez, Social Media Specialist; Kelissa Rae Mauricio, Executive Assistant; and DOT officials, Assistant Secretary Sharlene Zabala-Batin and Director Roberto Alabado III.

This collaboration between the DOT and the Liga ng mga Barangay signifies a significant step towards empowering local communities and unlocking the full tourism potential of the Philippines’ diverse barangays.
