DOTr and CAAP officials accelerate Siargao airport expansion

Officials from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) have returned to Siargao Airport to personally inspect the ongoing modular expansion of its passenger terminal. The visit underscores the government’s commitment to expediting the project, which is a key component of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to enhance and improve regional airports across the country, recognizing their vital role in driving economic growth and tourism.

The modular expansion, which is expected to be completed by December 2025, aims to significantly increase the airport’s capacity and improve the overall passenger experience. Currently, the terminal has a seating capacity of 256 passengers. Upon completion, this will be expanded to accommodate 629 passengers, more than tripling its current capacity.

“Bumalik tayo para masimulan na agad-agad ang construction ng terminal expansion dito sa Siargao airport,” stated Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, emphasizing the urgency and importance of immediately commencing the construction.

Secretary Dizon also instructed CAAP to ensure that the proposed expansion of the Siargao Passenger Terminal Building adheres strictly to all aviation safety standards. This commitment to safety is paramount to ensuring that more passengers and tourists can be accommodated efficiently and securely in the facility once it is operational.

Joining the inspection were renowned Architect Royal Pineda and acclaimed designer Kenneth Cobonpue, who are part of the creative team contributing to the airport’s enhanced design. Their involvement highlights a focus on integrating both functionality and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that the expanded airport not only meets international standards but also reflects the unique character of Siargao Island.

The Siargao Airport currently handles an average of 17 commercial flights daily, a testament to the island’s growing popularity as a premier travel destination. The expansion is a critical step towards addressing the increasing demand and further solidifying Siargao’s position as an international gateway. This project is a testament to the Philippine government’s dedication to improving infrastructure and fostering sustainable development in key tourist hubs.
