DOTr and PPA expedite Amandayehan Port repairs, provide alternative route

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) have swiftly responded to the limitations imposed on the San Juanico Bridge, establishing the Amandayehan Port in Basey, Samar, as a crucial alternative route for vehicles and cargo, particularly benefiting truckers and those transporting over 3 tons.

The restrictions on the San Juanico Bridge, implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) due to identified structural integrity issues, significantly impacted the flow of goods and traffic in the region. The PPA’s proactive measures commenced on May 9, immediately following formal notification from the DPWH regarding the necessary restrictions.

The PPA promptly conducted inspections of various ports and released a list of potential alternative routes under the Port Management Office Eastern Leyte/Samar, including the ports of Calbayog, Catbalogan, Manguino-o, Tacloban, and Carigara.

In addition to these PPA-managed ports, the DPWH recommended the Amandayehan Port, a fishing port managed by the local government unit (LGU), as the primary alternative route due to its strategic location and proximity to Tacloban Port. Although not under PPA’s direct jurisdiction, the PPA assessed and inspected Amandayehan Port for its viability as a seaport for RoRo and LCT vessels.

On May 25, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon and PPA General Manager Jay Santiago conducted an immediate inspection of the Amandayehan Port alongside local government officials. Secretary Dizon issued directives to expedite all permit processing and the immediate deployment of vessels, while General Manager Santiago emphasized the importance of adhering to high standards of public service throughout these processes.

Secretary Dizon and General Manager Santiago today, Sunday, June 8,  revisited Basey to personally oversee the operational status of Amandayehan Port. During their visit, both officials affirmed that the rapid and decisive response is not merely a demonstration of the government’s capability but a testament to an administration that honors its commitments – a government that actively listens and acts to ensure the convenience and well-being of every Filipino.

The operationalization of Amandayehan Port as an alternative route is expected to provide significant relief for trucks and cargo previously unable to traverse the San Juanico Bridge, ensuring the continued flow of commerce and essential goods in the region.
