Pres. Marcos Jr. diversifies oil sources to safeguard national energy security

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced that the Philippine government is actively negotiating with non-traditional oil-producing nations to secure a stable and resilient fuel supply. This strategic move aims to shield the Filipino people from the volatility of the global energy market.

Speaking to the media before his return to the Philippines, President Marcos emphasized the necessity of expanding the country’s energy portfolio beyond its historical suppliers. “Naghahanap tayo ng iba’t ibang lugar na makapagbigay ng supply sa atin,” President Marcos stated. “We are talking to many other countries who we normally do not buy oil from, but hopefully, we will be able to come to an agreement with them and that we will get further supply from them.”

The administration’s shift toward diversification is a direct response to escalating geopolitical tensions that have disrupted global trade routes and destabilized pricing. The President identified the primary obstacle as the sheer unpredictability of the current international climate, which complicates long-term fiscal planning and market forecasting.

The President noted that the uncertainty regarding the duration of these conflicts makes it exceptionally difficult for both suppliers and financial markets to stabilize.

“The real problem here that everybody is having to deal with is hindi natin alam kung gaano katagal ito,” the President added, highlighting that the risk of expanded conflict remains a persistent threat to global energy costs.

Despite these external pressures, the Marcos administration reaffirms its commitment to mitigating the impact of high fuel prices on the public. By establishing new bilateral energy partnerships, the government seeks to:

  • Enhance Energy Reserves: Reducing reliance on a limited number of sources.

  • Stabilize Domestic Prices: Buffering the local economy against sudden spikes in the global market.

  • Strengthen Diplomatic Ties: Building new economic bridges with emerging oil-producing partners.

The Philippine government continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that energy security remains a top priority for national development and economic stability.
