In a decisive move to strengthen the nation’s energy security, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially signed two milestone Petroleum Service Contracts (PSCs) aimed at accelerating the exploration and development of indigenous energy resources.
The signing comes at a critical juncture as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to create volatility in the global oil market. By prioritizing local energy production, the administration aims to insulate the Philippine economy from external price shocks and reduce its long-standing dependence on imported fuels.
The newly signed contracts greenlight high-impact projects designed to tap into the country’s natural wealth:
-
Alegria Oil and Gas Field (Cebu): Continued development and production efforts to maximize the yield of this proven field.
-
Natural Hydrogen Exploration (Leyte): A pioneering venture into hydrogen exploration, positioning the Philippines as a forward-thinking player in the global transition toward cleaner, innovative energy sources.
During the signing, the President emphasized that these initiatives are more than just infrastructure projects—they are a roadmap for a more resilient Philippines. The Department of Energy (DOE) remains at the forefront of this mission, focusing on three core pillars:
-
Reduced Import Reliance: Shifting the energy mix toward local sources to keep the economy stable during global supply disruptions.
-
Grid Stability: Ensuring a more consistent and reliable power supply for homes and industries.
-
Economic Growth: Creating high-quality jobs and livelihood opportunities for local communities at the heart of these exploration sites.
“The use of indigenous energy resources is no longer just an option; it is a necessity for our national security,” the administration noted. These projects represent a significant step toward the Department of Energy’s goal of modernizing the energy sector and improving the daily lives of Filipinos through lower costs and enhanced reliability.
By tapping into the potential of Cebu and Leyte, the Philippines reaffirms its commitment to becoming a proactive leader in energy development in Southeast Asia.
