PPA leads marine conservation efforts for Month of the Ocean 2026, reaffirms commitment to plastic-fee ports

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) joins the national observance of the Month of the Ocean this May 2026, reinforcing its role as a proactive steward of the country’s marine environment.

In accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 57, Series of 1999, this year’s celebration adopts the theme “Sustaining Ocean Health, Sailing a Resilient Nation.” The PPA recognizes that while ports serve as the primary gateways for global trade and domestic travel, they also hold a critical responsibility in safeguarding the waters that connect the Philippine archipelago.

To mark the occasion, the PPA is launching a series of educational and operational initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of environmental consciousness among port users and stakeholders:

  • Maritime Safety and Marine Environmental Protection Awareness Seminars: Specialized training sessions designed to integrate safety protocols with environmental preservation.

  • Biodiversity Workshops: Focused seminars highlighting the protection of marine ecosystems and the diverse species that inhabit Philippine waters.

  • Sustainability Forums: Collaborative discussions on how port operations can better align with long-term ecological health.

A cornerstone of the PPA’s environmental strategy is the rigorous implementation of Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 11-2021. The PPA reiterates that the ban on single-use plastics remains strictly enforced across all PPA-managed ports nationwide. This policy aims to significantly reduce plastic leakage into the ocean, protecting coral reefs and marine life from non-biodegradable waste.

“Our ports are more than just hubs of commerce; they are the front lines of our relationship with the sea,” the PPA stated. “By integrating strict environmental policies with active community education, we ensure that our maritime progress does not come at the cost of our natural heritage.”

The PPA remains committed to the promotion of safe, clean, and sustainable oceans through collective action. By bridging the gap between industrial efficiency and environmental responsibility, the Authority aims to secure a resilient maritime nation for present and future generations of Filipinos.
