Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) vowed to “make it happen” its PHP7 billion investment in the Philippines as it aims to begin production of its hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) model by 2028 at its plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Toshiaki Kato, executive vice-president of MMPC, said Wednesday during a press conference for the 10th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) slated on June 4-7, 2026 at the World Trade Center in Pasay.
“We are committed to make it happen,” said Mr. Kato even as he described the new project as a “big challenge” including in sourcing of parts and skills needed.
Kato also said their plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna still has room to accommodate the new capacity for the new hybrid EVs. The plant has has a production capacity of 50,000 units.
Victor Vinarao, MMPC vice-president, said the production volume for the planned HEV will depend on the requirements that may be spelled out under the Executive Order on the EVIS program. They have not also spoken with any local autoparts supplier stressing such requirements will largely depend on the EO government the EVIS program.
In April this year, MMPC President and CEO Takao Kato reaffirmed the planned investment during a meeting with Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Secretary Frederick Go at the Malacañan Palace.
During the meeting, the MMC top official said, “The Philippines has long been one of our most important markets, where we have engaged in production and sales for many years. In cooperation with the Philippine government, we are honored to contribute to the advancement of vehicle electrification and industrial development through the EVIS program, as well as to support the further growth of the Philippine economy.”
MMC through its local subsidiary Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) plans to join the EV industry through the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS).
The Board of Investments (BOI) is currently finalizing the EVIS program for endorsement to the Fiscal Incentives Review Board and approval of the President.
In line with the start of production of the new HEV model, MMPC is planning additional investments, including enhancements to its facilities to support electrification. These initiatives will contribute to expanding the local supply chain and generating employment opportunities in the region.
At present, MMPC assembles Mirage, Mirage G4, L300 vans at its 21.4 hectare plant in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, which has a production capacity of 50,000 units a year. It also distributes XForce, Xpander, Xpander Cross, Destinator, Montero Sport, Triton, and Versa Van.
