In a significant step toward deepening Southeast Asian alliances, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of the Kingdom of Thailand in Cebu to discuss a broad range of initiatives aimed at strengthening the longstanding partnership between the Philippines and Thailand.

The high-level bilateral meeting took place immediately following the conclusion of the 48th ASEAN Summit.

During their discussion, President Marcos and Prime Minister Anutin emphasized the deep historical ties between their nations and mapped out strategic pathways for future collaboration. The dialogue focused on several key pillars:

  • High-Level Exchanges: Both leaders committed to maintaining active diplomatic channels and increasing reciprocal visits among senior officials to ensure continuous alignment on key policies.

  • Trade and Economic Cooperation: Recognizing the mutual benefits of robust economic ties, the leaders discussed expanding bilateral trade, encouraging cross-border investments, and streamlining joint economic ventures to boost post-pandemic growth.

  • People-to-People Ties: The leaders pledged to enhance cultural exchanges, tourism, and educational partnerships, further bridging the cultural gap and fostering deeper understanding between Filipinos and Thais.

  • Combatting Transnational Crime: Acknowledging the evolving security landscape in the region, both countries agreed to tighten security cooperation, specifically targeting human trafficking, cyber fraud, and illicit drug networks.

Beyond bilateral matters, President Marcos and Prime Minister Anutin exchanged views on pressing regional and global challenges.

Both leaders reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to ASEAN solidarity, emphasizing that a unified ASEAN remains crucial to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. They agreed to continue working closely within multilateral frameworks to advocate for the rule of law, peaceful dispute resolution, and sustainable development.

“The partnership between the Philippines and Thailand remains a cornerstone of our regional strategy. By working together, we not only secure the prosperity of our own nations but also contribute significantly to the collective strength and resilience of the ASEAN community,” President Marcos stated.

The meeting concluded with both leaders expressing optimism for the future of Philippines-Thailand relations, paving the way for a more integrated, secure, and prosperous partnership.
