Philippine Airlines (PAL), the national flag carrier, is set to become the 16th member airline of the oneworld® Alliance.
The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at a press briefing held during the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 82nd Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
Philippine Airlines was formally invited to join the alliance as a member-designate by the oneworld governing board, which comprises the chief executives of all member airlines.
“This is a defining and transformative moment for Philippine Airlines,” said Lucio C. Tan III, President of PAL Holdings, Inc. “Becoming a member of the oneworld Alliance and strengthening Southeast Asia’s representation within the group brings the Philippines and the region closer to the world like never before. Together with our partners, we will deliver greater choice, consistent journeys, and a world-class travel experience that reflects the warmth of Filipino hospitality.”
The integration of Philippine Airlines will significantly expand oneworld’s global footprint, adding 31 unique destinations throughout the Philippines and neighboring regions to the alliance network. PAL’s robust international network will bridge critical gaps and support rising customer demand across:
-
Asia & Southeast Asia
-
North America
-
Europe
-
The Middle East
-
Australia
“Philippine Airlines’ entry into oneworld supports our long‑term strategic growth and strengthens our connectivity across key markets in the Asia Pacific region,” said Robert Isom, American Airlines Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the one world Governing Board. “The airline has a proud heritage and will serve a critical role in our Southeast Asia network.”
Ole Orvér, oneworld Chief Executive Officer, added: “Philippine Airlines is a globally respected carrier with a strong commitment to innovation and customer service that aligns with oneworld’s reputation for delivering a premium experience. This decision is an endorsement of oneworld and its global customer offering. We look forward to welcoming Philippine Airlines into the alliance.”
Once PAL’s integration into the alliance is complete, millions of travelers will unlock reciprocal premium perks:
-
Mabuhay Miles Rewards: Members of PAL’s Mabuhay Miles programme will be able to seamlessly earn and redeem miles across the entire global oneworld network. Similarly, frequent flyers of existing oneworld airlines can earn and redeem rewards when flying with PAL.
