DOE, DOT align efforts to power sustainable tourism in off-grid areas

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Tourism (DOT) have begun collaborative planning for the rollout of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Small and Off-Grid Regions for Tourism (REESORT) Program.

DOE Undersecretary Mylene C. Capongcol recently welcomed DOT Assistant Secretary Judilyn S. Quiachon during a courtesy visit to discuss the strategic implementation of the program. The meeting follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the two agencies, which formalizes their interagency cooperation.

The REESORT Program aims to drive the adoption of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency measures within tourism establishments, with a particular focus on small and off-grid destinations.

Key highlights of the collaboration:
  • Interagency Alignment: The courtesy visit allowed both departments to exchange critical insights and harmonize their strategies for a seamless program rollout.

  • Targeted Clean Energy: The initiative specifically targets remote and off-grid tourist areas, reducing their reliance on traditional fossil fuels and lowering operational costs.

  • Sustainability Focus: By integrating energy efficiency and renewable technologies, the program seeks to minimize the environmental footprint of the country’s tourism sector.

As implementation plans move forward, the DOE and DOT reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy practices. This partnership marks a significant step toward building a more resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible Philippine tourism industry.
