PYROSHIELD: Raising the Philippine flag in passive fire protection

From imported fire-protection systems to Filipino-engineered technology protecting the infrastructure that moves the Philippine economy.

For decades, highly specialized passive fire-protection systems used in major Philippine infrastructure have largely been associated with imported global brands.

Today, a Filipino-developed technology is beginning to change that narrative.

PyroShield Fire Retardant Intumescent Paint, developed and locally manufactured by Colorzone Ventures Corporation under PRIME Construction Solutions, is positioning Philippine engineering alongside established international passive fire-protection technologies, not simply through the advantage of being locally made, but through performance, productivity and economics.

And the transition from imported to Filipino technology is already happening.

According to Colorzone Ventures Corporation, PyroShield has replaced an established international fire-protection brand at a major manufacturing operation in the Philippines. The site has ordered approximately 23,300 pails of PyroShield to date, with requirements projected to increase substantially and projected to reach four times the current volume as the program expands in the next 2 years.

The significance goes beyond one large order as it demonstrates that locally developed technology can move from being considered an alternative to imported products to becoming the selected system for demanding industrial applications.

Competing Through Engineering

PyroShield is a water-based intumescent coating designed to expand during fire exposure and form an insulating char that slows heat transfer to structural steel.

But its most significant proposition is how efficiently the required protection can be delivered.

For up to a two-hour fire resistance rating, PyroShield’s current system design targets approximately 0.8 mm dry film thickness, compared with around 1.5–1.6 mm cited by the company for typical imported systems used as benchmarks.

Less coating thickness can translate directly into less material, fewer application cycles and faster project completion.

PyroShield can also be recoated in approximately two to three hours, compared with substantially longer intervals associated with many solvent-based systems.

For fast-track EPC projects, precast construction, modular manufacturing and large industrial developments, Colorzone estimates that these advantages can reduce coating time by up to 60 percent.

Turning Fire Protection Into Project Economics

Fire protection is ultimately not measured by the price of a pail. The more meaningful calculation is the total installed cost of achieving the required fire rating.

By reducing material consumption, application time, labor requirements and equipment utilization, Colorzone estimates that PyroShield can generate up to 65% savings in material and application costs, depending on project conditions and the system being compared.

Local manufacturing creates another advantage.

Imported systems carry international freight, inventory requirements, foreign-exchange exposure and longer replenishment cycles.

A locally produced system can provide shorter delivery times, more responsive technical support, greater supply continuity and opportunities for project-specific technical collaboration.

For warehouses, factories, airports, data centers and major infrastructure projects, those differences can become significant at scale.

Filipino Technology, Global Standards

Being locally manufactured does not mean creating a lower technical benchmark.

PyroShield has been developed around internationally recognized fire-performance standards, including ASTM E119 for fire resistance and ASTM E84 for surface-burning characteristics, while the product is positioned in alignment with Philippine fire and building requirements. Colorzone’s technical material also identifies the product as low-VOC and compliant with the Philippine Green Building Code.

Its thin-film configuration also preserves the appearance of exposed structural steel while avoiding the weight and bulk associated with some board or sprayed fireproofing systems.

The result is passive fire protection that can become part of the architectural finish rather than something that needs to be concealed.

Water-Based Technology in an Uncertain Global Market

PyroShield’s water-based formulation also provides a strategic sourcing advantage.

Colorzone reports that recent volatility affecting solvent-based raw materials has contributed to 30–40% increases in the cost of some solvent-based products within its supply environment.

A high-technology water-based intumescent formulation therefore offers more than environmental benefits. It can reduce dependence on volatile solvent inputs while supporting greater pricing stability.

The overall system can still leverage durable primer and protective topcoat technologies where required, combining a water-based intumescent layer with a complete protective coating system.

From Import Substitution to Technology Substitution

This may ultimately be PyroShield’s most important contribution.

The Philippine manufacturing story has traditionally focused on replacing imported goods with locally manufactured alternatives.

PyroShield represents a more ambitious transition: from import substitution to technology substitution.

It is not asking the industry to choose a Filipino product simply because it is Filipino.

It is asking engineers, contractors, developers and facility owners to compare it against international systems on the things that matter:

Fire performance. Required thickness. Application speed.

Installed cost. Supply reliability. Technical support. With PyroShield increasingly protecting manufacturing plants, warehouses and other critical infrastructure, the Philippine flag is being raised in passive fire protection not through a slogan, but through something far more meaningful:

An inspiring story of a Filipino technology being chosen where imported technology once stood.
