Alternergy begins installation of the country’s largest wind turbines in Quezon

Renewable energy pioneer Alternergy Holdings Corporation (ALTER) has achieved a major milestone in its Alabat Wind Project, with the arrival of the first batch of the largest wind turbines ever installed in the Philippines. Delivered through its subsidiary, Alabat Wind Power Corporation (AWPC), the turbines arrived this week at a jetty specially constructed by Alternergy on Alabat Island, Quezon Province.

The first two 8-megawatt (MW) turbines, manufactured by Envision Energy, were transported by ocean barge and are the first of eight turbines slated for the 64 MW Alabat Wind Project. Each turbine features three blades, each measuring 90 meters—roughly the length of a football field—resulting in an impressive 182-meter total wingspan.

Once fully constructed, the turbine towers will reach a height of 195 meters, making them comparable in scale to the RCBC Plaza or Ayala Triangle Gardens Tower 2 in Makati City—both towering at around 50 stories.

The Alabat Wind Project marks a series of firsts:

  • It is the first wind project in Quezon Province,
  • The first to be constructed along the Philippine Pacific Ocean coastline, and
  • It features the largest capacity wind turbines ever deployed in the country.

“The arrival of the first shipment of these record-setting turbines marks a significant milestone for the Alabat Wind Project,” said Gerry Magbanua, President of Alternergy and AWPC. “These 8 MW turbines will efficiently harness the island’s robust wind resources, supporting Quezon Province’s clean energy transition while minimizing environmental impact.”

Construction on Alabat Island is well underway, with full project completion targeted by the end of 2025. The Alabat Wind Project is also poised to be among the first wind farms completed under the Department of Energy’s 2nd Green Energy Auction Program launched in July 2023.

This wind project is one of five renewable energy developments Alternergy currently has under construction, contributing to the company’s “Road to 500 MW” goal—aiming to achieve a total installed renewable capacity of 500 megawatts by 2026.
