Marcos hails strengthened PH-France ties, cites shared values and rule of law

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday lauded the growing and dynamic diplomatic relationship between the Philippines and France, underscoring their firm foundation in shared democratic values and mutual respect for international law.

During a courtesy call at Malacañang by French Minister for Foreign Trade, International Financing, and French Nationals Abroad Laurent Saint-Martin, President Marcos expressed his appreciation for France’s continued support to the Philippines—both in tangible aid and in diplomatic solidarity.

“It is very encouraging for the Philippines to see that, despite the great geographical distance between our two countries, the primacy of our shared values and our adherence to international law remain strong and enduring pillars of our relationship,” Marcos said.

The President also thanked Minister Saint-Martin for visiting the Philippines, calling it a meaningful gesture that further strengthens bilateral cooperation.

In response, Saint-Martin extended the warm regards of French President Emmanuel Macron to President Marcos and the Filipino people. He also expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by the Philippine government, particularly by President Marcos and Trade Secretary Cristina Roque.

The Philippines and France have enjoyed 78 years of formal diplomatic relations, which began on June 26, 1947. Over the decades, the two countries have expanded cooperation across multiple sectors.

There are currently more than 31,000 Filipinos residing in France, many of whom are domestic workers, professionals, students, artists, and spouses of French nationals—forming a vital bridge between the two nations.

The Philippines and France have signed a broad range of bilateral agreements, covering air services, cultural and defense cooperation, film and creative collaborations, and development initiatives, reflecting the depth and diversity of their partnership.
