Intra-Asia container shipping costs surge: Drewry Index up 11%

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), a key indicator of regional spot container freight rates, has seen a significant increase, climbing 11% in the two weeks leading up to April 15, 2025. The index now stands at $668 per 40-foot container.

The IACI is a volume-weighted measure that tracks spot container freight rates across 18 major Intra-Asia trade lanes connected to and from China. These lanes encompass key destinations in three sub-regions:

  • North/East Asia: Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan (Republic of China)
  • Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam
  • South/West Asia: India and the United Arab Emirates

The market freight rates used to calculate the IACI are collected for the following specific routes:

  • Busan-Shanghai
  • Ho Chi Minh City-Shanghai
  • Jakarta-Shanghai
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port-Shanghai
  • Kaohsiung-Shanghai
  • Laem Chabang-Shanghai
