President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos are scheduled to return to the Philippines on Monday following their attendance at the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday — a presence the President described as “a gesture of deep respect.”
“I attended the funeral of Pope Francis as a gesture of deep respect — from one of the world’s most faithful nations, to a Pope who touched the hearts of millions,” President Marcos said in an official statement.
He emphasized that he represented not only the Philippine government, but also the spirit of the Filipino people: “prayerful, hopeful, and grateful — who would have wanted to be there to say thank you to a shepherd who made them feel seen.”
The Funeral Mass, held at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, drew thousands of mourners from around the world, including world leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Catholic faithful. The solemn ceremony marked the passing of a pontiff known for his deep compassion for the poor and marginalized, and his unwavering commitment to humility, service, and social justice.
“This is a moment of shared faith, national pride, and quiet tribute from the Filipino people to a Pope who walked with the humble and gave voice to the unseen,” the President added.
