President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday pledged swift reforms in the country’s transport system and full accountability following a string of fatal vehicular accidents.
In a video message posted on his official Facebook page, President Marcos extended his condolences to the families of those killed and injured in two recent tragedies: the multi-vehicle collision at the SCTEX toll plaza in Tarlac and a fatal incident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.
“Ten lives were lost in a devastating collision in Tarlac. Days later, two more—one of them a child—were taken in a tragic accident at the airport. These incidents should never have happened,” Marcos said.
“We will make the changes that need to be made. We will demand accountability where it is due. And we will build a transport system that truly protects the Filipino people.”
The President said he has directed Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon to take immediate and decisive action, including identifying and holding accountable those responsible for the recent tragedies.
Among the measures ordered by the President is a comprehensive review of the country’s driver licensing system, aimed at ensuring that only qualified, responsible, and competent individuals are allowed behind the wheel.
Marcos also called for a nationwide audit of bus operators to verify compliance with safety and vehicle maintenance standards.
In addition, the President directed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to address exploitative labor practices in the transport sector—such as excessive working hours and unreasonable quotas—which contribute to driver fatigue and put public safety at risk.
“We owe it to the victims and their families to act—not only with sympathy, but with resolve,” Marcos said. “These lives must not be lost in vain.”
