New flood control project brings relief to Buenavista, Quezon

Residents of Barangay Poblacion in Buenavista, Quezon Province, are now experiencing a profound sense of security with the recent completion of a vital flood control structure along the Piris River. This significant infrastructure project, spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), promises to provide much-needed protection from historical flooding and enhance community safety.

The newly completed structure is a 406 linear meter revetment constructed on the left side of the Piris River. It forms a crucial part of the national flood management efforts under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s “Build Better More” program, which prioritizes the resilience, safety, and sustainable development of communities across the Philippines.

DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Region 4A Director Jovel G. Mendoza, highlighted that this completed revetment is the initial phase of a larger project designed to comprehensively mitigate flood risks in the area. Historically, frequent and severe flooding has caused extensive damage to homes, agricultural lands, and local road networks, severely disrupting livelihoods and economic activities in Barangay Poblacion.

Beyond its primary function of flood protection, the project also brings additional benefits by revitalizing the riverside. It creates enhanced public spaces that foster recreation and strengthen community bonds.

“With the completion of this flood control structure, we are not only protecting lives and properties but also giving residents the peace of mind they deserve,” stated Secretary Bonoan.

The project was implemented by the DPWH Quezon 3rd District Engineering Office and received funding of ₱96.5 million under the 2024 DPWH Regular Infrastructure Program.

In addition to this significant flood control initiative, the DPWH Quezon 3rd District Engineering Office is actively implementing four other infrastructure projects in Buenavista, totaling ₱29.11 million. These ongoing projects include river improvement along the Hagonghong Communal Irrigation System, the construction of the Rizal-Villa Magsaysay Road, and the development of two multi-purpose buildings in Barangay Maligaya and Batabat Norte.
