Pres. Marcos Jr. directs comprehensive aid for returning MV Magic Seas seafarers

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a direct order to all national government agencies to provide comprehensive assistance, including financial aid, to the 17 Filipino seafarers of the MV Magic Seas and their families. The seafarers are scheduled to arrive in Manila tomorrow, July 11, from Djibouti in East Africa.

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed the President’s directive during a Palace press briefing today, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), particularly Filipino seafarers.

“The standing directive of our beloved President is to do everything to provide full protection to our OFWs, especially our Filipino seafarers and their families,” Secretary Cacdac stated. “We will provide the necessary whole-of-government assistance, as directed by the President, to the returning crew members of MV Magic Seas.”

The returning seafarers will receive a wide range of support, including financial, humanitarian, medical, and psychosocial counseling assistance. This coordinated effort will involve various government agencies, including the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The 17 Filipino crew members were among the 22 seafarers rescued after the Greek-owned bulk carrier MV Magic Seas was attacked by Houthi rebels on Sunday while navigating the Red Sea near Hodeidah, Yemen. The rebels reportedly used drones, missiles, rocket-propelled grenades, and small arms in the assault, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.

The Philippine government reiterates its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens working abroad and stands ready to provide all necessary support to those affected by unforeseen circumstances.
