Pres. Marcos Jr. unveils ambitious plan to electrify one million more homes with solar power by 2028

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced a bold initiative to provide electricity to an additional one million Filipino homes through solar power home systems within the next three years, targeting completion by the end of 2028. The announcement was a key highlight of his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), underscoring the administration’s commitment to sustainable energy and nationwide electrification.

“By the end of 2028, an additional one million households will have electricity through solar power home systems,” President Marcos stated, emphasizing the government’s strategic shift towards renewable energy sources to power communities, especially in underserved areas.

The President further detailed plans to construct 200 new power plants over the next three years. These plants are projected to supply electricity to a staggering four million homes, over 2,000 factories, and nearly 7,000 commercial establishments, significantly boosting the nation’s energy capacity and supporting economic growth.

The Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) are tasked with rigorously pursuing the electrification targets, with a particular focus on provinces such as Quezon, Camarines Norte, Palawan, Masbate, Samar, Negros Occidental, and Zamboanga del Sur.

President Marcos highlighted the country’s existing portfolio of modern power plants, which integrate new technologies and clean energy solutions, including solar, wind, and natural gas. This diversified approach reinforces the Philippines’ position as a global advocate for renewable energy.

Since the start of the Marcos administration in 2022, the government has successfully brought electricity to approximately 2.5 million homes, significantly reducing the initial 5 million households without power. This new commitment aims to bridge the remaining gap and ensure universal access to electricity across the archipelago.
