DOE partners with Singaporean experts to accelerate waste-to-energy development

The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a significant step toward addressing the nation’s waste management challenges and boosting its renewable energy portfolio. In a recent workshop, the DOE brought together experts from Singapore to explore the potential of waste-to-energy (WTE) technology in the Philippines.

The workshop focused on a comprehensive review of global best practices, with discussions centered on identifying the most suitable WTE technologies, exploring innovative funding models, and crafting effective policies that could accelerate the construction and operation of WTE facilities across the country. The collaboration with Singaporean experts provides invaluable insights, as Singapore has successfully integrated WTE into its urban waste management and energy infrastructure.

This initiative is a crucial part of the DOE’s strategy to not only mitigate the growing problem of waste disposal but also to diversify the national energy mix with a sustainable and reliable source. By converting municipal solid waste into electricity, WTE facilities offer a dual solution that addresses environmental concerns while enhancing the nation’s energy security.

“This is a pivotal moment in our journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable Philippines,” said a DOE official. “By tapping into the expertise of our partners from Singapore, we are laying the groundwork for a robust framework that will enable us to transform waste into a valuable resource. This technology holds the promise of a more secure energy future and a healthier environment for all Filipinos.”

The DOE will use the insights and recommendations from this workshop to develop a strategic roadmap for WTE implementation, aiming to create a sustainable and economically viable solution for the country’s waste and energy needs.
