A new solar power plant in Tantangan, South Cotabato, is set to provide clean energy to over 82,000 Filipino households, marking a significant milestone in the growing clean energy partnership between the United Kingdom and the Philippines. The project, a ₱4.49 billion investment, recently began construction, demonstrating how UK expertise and financing are helping to transform the Philippines’ energy landscape.
This 99-megawatt solar farm is a collaborative effort backed by British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution, in partnership with HSBC and Pentagreen Capital. The innovative funding model has made this ambitious undertaking possible.
When operational, the Tantangan Solar Power Plant will generate enough clean electricity annually to power more than 82,000 Filipino households while preventing 66,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere each year.
Mike Welch, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the British Embassy Manila, highlighted the project’s impact, stating, “This new joint financing facility between the UK’s British International Investment and Pentagreen, with ib vogt Singapore, will support a 99MWp solar power project in South Cotabato, Mindanao. This will have a positive impact on local communities and businesses, as well as supporting the broader energy transition in the country.”
The project is being developed by ib vogt, an international solar company. This is their second major solar initiative in Mindanao, and it is expected to create local employment opportunities during its construction and operational phases. Beyond providing clean energy, the plant will also strengthen the national electricity grid, serving millions of Filipinos.
This latest project builds on a growing portfolio of UK investments in Philippine renewable energy, including recent support for wind farms in Luzon and Visayas and another large-scale solar installation in Nueva Ecija. These initiatives underscore the strong, collaborative partnership between the UK and the Philippines, delivering tangible benefits for communities and businesses while advancing global climate action.
