Residential Cruise Ship Villa Vie Odyssey makes historic maiden call to Subic Bay Freeport

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) celebrated a significant milestone in its maritime and tourism history with the maiden port call of the residential cruise ship, Villa Vie Odyssey, on Tuesday, September 23.

The ship, carrying approximately 650 passengers, docked at Freeport, marking its inaugural visit as part of its unique, long-term world cruise itinerary. The arrival was met with an official and enthusiastic welcoming ceremony led by SBMA officials and employees, alongside key representatives from the Bureau of Immigration, Bureau of Quarantine, and other vital stakeholders.

Villa Vie Odyssey and its Global Residents

The Villa Vie Odyssey is not a typical cruise liner. It operates as a residential cruise ship, offering a pioneering full-time world cruise experience for its “global residents,” who purchase cabins for long-term stays rather than traditional, shorter holiday voyages.

The ship is scheduled to remain in the Freeport for two full days, providing its international passengers with a substantial opportunity to explore the diverse tourism destinations and attractions within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. This extended stay is a significant boost for local tourism operators and businesses, underscoring Subic Bay’s appeal as a premier destination in Southeast Asia.

About the Ship

Formerly known as the Braemar, the 924-passenger vessel was acquired by Villa Vie Residences in 2023. It subsequently underwent a comprehensive refurbishment before its 2024 launch as the Villa Vie Odyssey.

The ship’s design is intentionally smaller than modern mega-ships, a strategic choice that allows it to access more unique and diverse ports globally, including locations like Subic Bay. Onboard amenities cater to its long-term residents, featuring multiple dining options, swimming pools, a gym equipped with Peloton bikes, and various community spaces dedicated to activities such as art workshops and fitness classes.

A Bright Future for Subic Bay’s Cruise Tourism

This historic port call highlights the increasing recognition of the Subic Bay Freeport as a world-class maritime gateway and a compelling tourism spot. SBMA leadership noted that the visit by the Villa Vie Odyssey opens a new chapter, signalling Subic Bay’s capacity and readiness to accommodate the evolving niche of long-term residential cruise tourism. The Authority is committed to strengthening its partnerships and infrastructure to welcome more unique vessels and global visitors in the future.
