Pres. Marcos Jr. inspects Cebu’s first Bayanihan Village; rapid shelter built for earthquake victims

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. personally visited San Remigio, Cebu, today to inspect the first-ever Bayanihan Village, marking a swift and decisive government response to the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the province on September 30.

In Barangay Poblacion, San Remigio municipality, President Marcos inspected the 45 Modular Shelter Units (MSUs) deployed by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD). This inspection confirms the Administration’s commitment to providing safer and more dignified temporary housing for displaced families who were primarily living in nearby tents.

The Bayanihan Village is a testament to the nation’s spirit of collaboration, having been conceptualized and completed in just one week. This rapid deployment was made possible through the concerted efforts of various government agencies led by the DHSUD, including the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), along with key private sector partners.

These modular shelters are designated for families whose homes were declared totally damaged and whose original areas have been classified as no-build zones.

In addition to housing, the DSWD has rapidly distributed financial assistance to aid in recovery, providing PhP10,125 to families with totally damaged homes and PhP5,250.00 to families with partially damaged homes.

The DHSUD confirmed it is on track to fulfill President Marcos’ directive to provide at least 150 modular shelter units for earthquake-displaced families across the three hardest-hit areas in Cebu: Daanbantayan, San Remigio, and Bogo City.

The successful construction and deployment of the Bayanihan Village highlights the government’s commitment to not only immediate disaster relief but also to structured, resilient temporary housing solutions.
