Pres. Marcos Jr. secures key bilateral commitments at ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. successfully concluded a series of high-level bilateral meetings with the leaders of Cambodia, Thailand, and Canada during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday. The discussions centered on strengthening regional security, boosting economic cooperation, and affirming support for the Philippines’ upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship.

In his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, President Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ enduring support for the peaceful resolution of regional disputes through dialogue and adherence to international law.

Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro, Palace Press Officer, noted that President Marcos expressed satisfaction with the progress in conflict resolution, particularly the recent signing of the Terms of Reference for the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). Prime Minister Hun Manet reciprocated the strong diplomatic ties by expressing Cambodia’s full support for the Philippines’ assumption of the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2026.

The President’s engagement with Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul began with President Marcos conveying his sincere condolences to the Thai people on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

The two leaders committed to working closely across multiple sectors, affirming a shared goal to significantly boost tourism, trade, and investments. They also prioritized private sector engagement and discussed strengthening agricultural exchanges to enhance food security and cooperation between the two nations. Like Cambodia, Thailand also expressed its unequivocal support for the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairmanship next year.

President Marcos concluded the day’s bilateral agenda with a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Joseph Carney. The discussion emphasized the strong cultural links, particularly the robust people-to-people exchanges, that bind the two countries.

President Marcos thanked Canada for its consistent support and highlighted their shared values on the rules-based international order, specifically citing the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Usec. Castro confirmed that both leaders are committed to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and energy. They also agreed to continue constructive engagement within the ASEAN framework, reinforcing the comprehensive partnership between the Philippines and Canada.
