AirAsia inaugurates Cebu hub with resumption of Kuala Lumpur direct flight, boosting regional connectivity

AirAsia officially launched its strategic hub in Cebu today, marked by the highly anticipated resumption of the direct flight from Kuala Lumpur (KL). Flight Z2 7113 touched down at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) shortly past noon, receiving a traditional and celebratory water cannon salute.

The launch solidifies AirAsia’s commitment to strengthening the Philippines’ role in regional travel and further establishing Cebu as a major international gateway.

AirAsia Philippines CEO, Captain Suresh Bangah, and AirAsia Aviation Group Chief Commercial Officer, Amanda Woo, were aboard the inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur. They were warmly welcomed upon arrival by a delegation of key local and airport officials, signifying strong partnership and support for the new hub.

Welcoming Dignitaries Included:

  • Hon. Ma. Cynthia Chan, Mayor of Lapu-Lapu City
  • Geleena Asis-Dimpas, OIC Regional Director, Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 7
  • Athanasios Titonis, Chief Executive Officer of the Aboitiz GMR Corporate (ACAC)

The establishment of the Cebu hub is a pivotal moment for AirAsia’s expansion strategy in the Philippines, aiming to connect Visayas and Mindanao with major Asian destinations.

“The launch of our Cebu hub and the resumption of the Kuala Lumpur route is a testament to our confidence in Cebu’s potential as a premier travel and business destination,” said Captain Suresh Bangah, AirAsia Philippines CEO. “This move is not just about adding flights; it’s about boosting tourism, facilitating trade, and making travel accessible for Cebuanos and international visitors alike.”

The re-established Kuala Lumpur–Cebu route is expected to significantly enhance inbound tourism from Malaysia and serve as a crucial connection point for passengers traveling onward across the vast AirAsia network.

Beyond the Kuala Lumpur service, AirAsia is significantly expanding its offerings from the new hub, demonstrating its commitment to both international and domestic market growth:

Route Type Destination Significance
International Kuala Lumpur (KUL) Resumed direct flight, key regional connection.
International Macao (MFM) Direct connection to a top leisure and business destination.
Domestic Davao (DVO) Connecting two major commercial centers in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Domestic Iloilo (ILO) Strengthening connectivity within the Visayas region.
Domestic Caticlan (MPH) Providing easy access to Boracay, the world-famous island destination.

Amanda Woo, AirAsia Aviation Group Chief Commercial Officer, commented, “MCIA’s growing role as a major international gateway is undeniable. AirAsia is proud to partner with Cebu to open this vibrant island to more visitors and, critically, to connect Cebuanos directly to the world. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that drives economic activity throughout the region.”
