Vietnam Airlines launches first direct Hanoi-Cebu route, bolstering Philippines-Vietnam tourism and commerce

Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) heralded a significant milestone in regional connectivity as it welcomed the inaugural direct flight from Hanoi, Vietnam, operated by Vietnam Airlines. Flight VN643, originating from Nội Bài International Airport (HAN), touched down in the early dawn hours to a traditional water cannon salute, marking the establishment of the first-ever direct scheduled service between Cebu and Vietnam’s capital city.

The new route promises to be a catalyst for increased tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Central Visayas and Northern Vietnam.

A high-level delegation was on hand to celebrate the historic arrival. The welcoming ceremony underscored the commitment of both nations to enhancing bilateral ties.

Key attendees included:

  • H.E. Lai Thai Bình, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Philippines

  • Ms. Zeny Pallugna, Director, Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT)

  • Mr. Đoàn Vũ, Vietnam Airlines Country Manager for the Philippines

  • Ms. Mary Ann Dimayabao, Head of Public Affairs, Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA)

The event began with opening remarks from Mr. Rodante Virata Ponio Jr., Head of Aviation Business & Development for MCIA, who highlighted the strategic importance of the new air link.  “This direct connection is more than just a flight; it is a vital bridge connecting the dynamic economies and rich cultures of Cebu and Hanoi,” said Mr. Ponio. “It opens up unprecedented opportunities for Cebuanos to explore the historical depth and modern vibrancy of Vietnam, while inviting Vietnamese travelers to discover the pristine beaches, unique flavors, and world-renowned hospitality of Cebu and the Visayas region.”

The direct service significantly reduces travel time and complexity, making Vietnam and the Philippines more accessible to leisure and business travelers alike.

  • For Filipino Travelers: Cebuanos and residents of the Visayas now have direct access to Hanoi’s iconic landmarks, including the historic Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site, Ha Long Bay. The route is expected to boost interest in Vietnam’s bustling cities, renowned culinary scene, and tranquil landscapes.

  • For Vietnamese Travelers: The new route positions Cebu as an immediate and attractive gateway to the Central and Southern Philippines. Vietnamese tourists can look forward to year-round tropical experiences, from the diving sites of Malapascua and Moalboal to the historical sites and modern urban conveniences of Metro Cebu.

Mr. Đoàn Vũ, Vietnam Airlines Country Manager, emphasized the airline’s commitment to the Philippines market. “Vietnam Airlines is proud to pioneer this direct connection, solidifying our role in linking Southeast Asia’s most promising destinations. We anticipate robust demand from both sides, fueling the recovery and growth of post-pandemic tourism and trade.”

The launch of the Hanoi-Cebu service aligns with regional efforts to enhance air connectivity and promote economic integration within ASEAN. This route is expected to facilitate business travel, streamline supply chain logistics, and deepen cultural understanding between the two nations.

MCIA is committed to working with Vietnam Airlines to ensure the success and sustainability of the new service, paving the way for potential frequency increases or additional direct routes in the future.
