Following a record-breaking year for commuter volume, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is intensifying operational improvements at major transport hubs to ensure a more seamless experience for the riding public.
The directive comes directly from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has instructed the DOTr to collaborate closely with private operators to modernize terminal operations and ease the daily commute for Filipinos.
The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) served as a primary indicator of this growing demand. In 2025, PITX recorded a total of 60,281,330 passengers, a significant increase of over 9 million compared to the 51.5 million commuters tracked in 2024.
The surge was particularly evident during the recent holiday season:
-
December 2025 Total: 5,692,840 passengers.
-
Holiday Period (Christmas/New Year): 3,431,341 passengers.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized that the DOTr is proactively managing this growth through increased capacity and tighter security protocols. “The DOTr and PITX are fully prepared for the increase in the number of passengers using the terminal,” said Secretary Lopez. “We will ensure that there is an adequate supply of buses and smooth operations at PITX, while also strengthening security for a smoother journey for our passengers.”
To further decongest Metro Manila and provide safer transfers, the DOTr highlighted key infrastructure milestones currently supporting PITX:
-
LRT-1 Integration: The terminal is now fully interconnected with the LRT-1 line.
-
New EDSA Busway Station: Construction is underway for a dedicated EDSA Busway Station at PITX to streamline travel for north-bound and south-bound commuters.
These developments are part of the DOTr’s broader strategy to strengthen intermodal connectivity, ensuring that major hubs can safely and efficiently accommodate the rising demand for public transport.
