The Philippines has expressed support for measures advanced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance the safety and welfare of seafarers operating in the Gulf region, including the Strait of Hormuz, amid heightened security risks.

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) said the country is aligning with international efforts to promote the protection of crews, as ongoing incidents continue to pose risks to one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors.

During the IMO Council’s 36th Extraordinary Session on March 18-19, Member States called for the cessation of attacks against commercial vessels and emphasized the importance of ensuring that affected ships have access to essential supplies such as food, water, and fuel. The Council also underscored the need to facilitate crew changes and maintain communication between seafarers and their families.

“Seafarers play a critical role in sustaining global trade. The Philippines remains committed to supporting the IMO’s efforts to ensure their safety and well-being,” said MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan.

As one of the world’s leading providers of seafarers, the Philippines noted that the situation highlights the risks faced by Filipino maritime personnel deployed in high-risk areas. MARINA affirmed its continued cooperation with the IMO and international partners to advance practical measures that promote the protection and welfare of seafarers.
