DMW bolsters protection for OFWs in Middle East, dismisses rumors of “Stranded” workers

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the safety of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families today, as Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac convened with licensed Philippine Recruitment Agencies (PRAs) to synchronize emergency response efforts amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

In a strategic meeting with recruitment leaders, Secretary Cacdac emphasized the “shared responsibility” between the government and the private sector in safeguarding Filipinos abroad. The DMW has directed all PRAs to implement a 24/7 monitoring system for their deployed workers, ensuring that any assistance or emergency communication needs are met without delay.

“Our shared responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of our OFWs, especially in times of crisis,” said Secretary Cacdac. “We are working hand-in-hand with our partners to ensure that no Filipino is left behind or left uninformed.”

The DMW also moved to clarify recent reports circulating online regarding the status of deployments. Secretary Cacdac officially dismissed claims that 40,000 OFWs are currently stranded due to a “deployment ban.”

  • No Active Ban: The DMW confirmed that no deployment ban has been imposed.

  • Adherence to Alert Levels: While the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) maintains specific alert levels for different regions, processing and deployment continue under strict safety guidelines.

To better equip workers for the evolving security landscape, the DMW is currently updating the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS). The revised curriculum will include:

  • Enhanced risk assessment training.

  • Specific security protocols for host countries.

  • Digital tools for rapid emergency reporting.

In line with the directives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the DMW continues to facilitate voluntary repatriation for OFWs and their dependents who wish to return to the Philippines.

The Department assured returning workers that a comprehensive reintegration program is in place, providing financial assistance, job placement services, and livelihood support to help families transition smoothly back to Philippine society.
