Pres. Marcos Jr. commemorates 75 years of PH-Holy See diplomatic relations, vows deeper partnership in nation-building

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. joined members of the diplomatic corps and church hierarchy on Wednesday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of formal diplomatic ties between the Philippines and the Holy See, affirming a partnership rooted in centuries of shared faith and a modern commitment to social justice.

In a commemorative reception held at the historic Ayuntamiento de Manila in Intramuros, President Marcos highlighted the deep-seated connection between the two states, noting that while formal ties began 75 years ago, the spiritual and cultural bond spans over four centuries.

“Guided by our common values and grounded in a long history of collaboration, we look forward to strengthening this partnership over the next 75 years, and working together to meet both local and global challenges,” the President stated.

During the event, the President emphasized the Catholic Church’s indispensable role in shaping the Filipino national identity. He credited the Church’s network of schools, hospitals, and charitable institutions with nurturing generations of Filipinos and fostering civic engagement.

The Chief Executive noted that the Holy See has remained a steadfast partner in the country’s development, offering spiritual guidance and hope during the nation’s most pivotal historical moments.

The President also reflected on the international dimension of this relationship, citing the significant presence of Filipino missionaries, pastoral workers, and laypeople serving within the Roman Curia and across the globe. He reiterated the Philippines’ adherence to the principles of Rerum Novarum, focusing on the protection of human dignity and the rights of the marginalized.

Key highlights from the President’s address included:

  • Peacebuilding in Mindanao: Recognition of the Holy See’s support for interfaith dialogue and reconciliation efforts in Southern Philippines.

  • Shared Values: A commitment to championing dialogue over division and reconciliation over conflict.

  • Renewal of Leadership: Acknowledgment of the 2025 episcopal renewal, which saw the appointment of six new bishops and four archbishops in the Philippines.

The evening concluded with a traditional toast led by President Marcos, honoring the enduring friendship between the Filipino people and the Holy See, and wishing continued good health to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

The event was attended by His Excellency Apostolic Nuncio Charles John Brown, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, and various high-ranking officials from both the Philippine government and the Catholic Church, including cardinals, bishops, and members of the Diplomatic Corps.

“At the heart of the Philippines’ relationship with the Holy See is a shared commitment to peace, human dignity, and social justice,” President Marcos concluded. “We walk together in service over self-interest.”
