UN and PH convene 3rd joint steering committee to accelerate 2026 strategic development priorities

In a pivotal move to fortify the nation’s development trajectory, the Government of the Philippines and the United Nations (UN) convened the 3rd Joint Steering Committee (JSC) meeting in Thursday, April 30. The high-level session focused on reviewing the milestones achieved under the 2024-2028 UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and aligning strategic interventions for the remainder of 2026.

Despite a year marked by complex global economic shifts and environmental challenges, the partnership reported robust progress throughout 2025. The UN system demonstrated continued agility, providing reliable technical and operational support across key sectors. These joint efforts have been instrumental in reinforcing national strategies as the Philippines nears its historic transition to Upper-Middle-Income Country (UMIC) status.

The review highlighted several critical achievements from the past year, including:

  • Enhanced Social Protection: Scaling up programs to shield vulnerable populations from economic shocks.

  • Climate Action: Implementing innovative, nature-based solutions to strengthen disaster resilience in high-risk regions.

  • Digital Transformation: Streamlining public service delivery through integrated UN-government digital initiatives.

During the meeting, Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan of the Department of Environment, Power, and Development (DEPDev) reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to the partnership’s long-term goals.

“The Government of the Philippines remains firmly committed to ensuring that the United Nations-Philippines Cooperation Framework delivers tangible outcomes that support our national priorities and improve the lives of our people,” Secretary Balisacan stated.

“We are looking forward to the United Nations and our partners continuing to provide strategic and high-impact support as we navigate this critical phase of our development.”

As the committee looks toward the second half of 2026, the UN and the Philippine Government have agreed to prioritize “high-impact accelerators.” These include deepening investments in human capital, fostering sustainable food systems, and ensuring that the country’s economic growth remains inclusive and equitable during its status transition.

The UN Resident Coordinator emphasized that the 2024-2028 framework is not merely a roadmap but a living commitment to “leaving no one behind,” ensuring that the benefits of the Philippines’ upward economic mobility reach the grassroots level.
