The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has awarded Captain Avhilash Rawat and the crew of the oil tanker MARLIN LUANDA for their exceptional bravery at sea.
The award, presented by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, recognized their heroic actions in protecting 23 lives and safeguarding the marine environment after the vessel was struck by an anti-ship ballistic missile.
The incident occurred on January 26, 2024, while the MARLIN LUANDA, chartered by Trafigura Beheer B.V. and managed by Suntech Ship Management PTE. Ltd., was fully loaded with naphtha and transiting the Gulf of Aden. A missile fired by Houthi forces from the Yemeni coast struck the vessel, igniting a fierce fire in one of the starboard cargo tanks.
Despite the immediate danger, Captain Rawat and his crew swiftly deployed firefighting equipment and initiated emergency procedures. They immediately contacted UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) and sent a distress call to coalition naval forces in the region.
Responding to the emergency, naval warships from the United States, India, and France arrived on the scene. The Indian Navy dispatched a team of ten personnel with specialized firefighting equipment, while the U.S. and French navies provided crucial low-expansion firefighting foam.
The fire raged for several hours, but Captain Rawat and his crew, demonstrating extraordinary courage and professionalism, relentlessly battled the blaze. After approximately 20 hours of intense firefighting efforts, the fire was finally extinguished with no injuries to the crew and no harm to the marine environment. The MARLIN LUANDA then proceeded to a safe harbor for inspection and necessary repairs.
Accepting the award, Captain Rawat expressed his profound gratitude to his crew, emphasizing their unwavering support and trust during the critical hours. He also acknowledged the invaluable assistance provided by the onboard security team from Ambrey and the swift and effective response from the Indian, French, and U.S. naval forces. Furthermore, he extended his appreciation to Suntech Ship Management PTE. Ltd., Trafigura Beheer B.V., and the families of the crew for their unwavering support.
Captain Rawat concluded his remarks by emphasizing the importance of seafarers’ unity, skill, and determination in navigating both calm and stormy seas.
The Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator extends its heartfelt congratulations to Captain Avhilash Rawat and the entire crew of the MARLIN LUANDA for their exemplary dedication to the safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment
