Transportation and storage sector sees strong growth, establishments up 7.9% and workforce expands to over 244,000

The formal transportation and storage sector experienced robust growth in 2024, driven by a surge in logistics support activities and a strong recovery in air transport.

According to the final results of the 2024 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the number of formal establishments in the sector grew to 3,309, marking a 7.9% increase from the 3,066 establishments recorded in 2022.

  • Logistics Support Leads in Numbers and Jobs: “Support activities for transportation” emerged as the dominant industry group, accounting for 45.8% of all establishments (1,515) and employing 41.2% of the sector’s workforce (100,690 workers).

  • Workforce & Compensation Boom: Total employment in the sector jumped 10.4% to 244,593 workers (from 221,493 in 2022). Average annual compensation also saw a significant 15.2% increase, rising to PhP 406.17 thousand per paid employee.

  • Air Transport Dominates Earnings and Payroll: While smaller in number of establishments, the passenger air transport industry group proved to be the economic powerhouse. It generated the highest total revenue (PhP 345.20 billion or 39.8% of the sector’s total) and paid the highest average annual compensation at a staggering PhP 1.68 million per employee.

  • National Capital Region (NCR) Remains the Hub: The NCR continues to heavily anchor the industry, hosting 46.4% of all establishments, employing 59.2% of the workforce, and generating a massive 81.0% (PhP 702.31 billion) of the sector’s total revenue.

Following logistics support activities, the land transport segments maintained a strong footprint:

  • Other Land Transport: 1,029 establishments (31.1% share) employing 33,600 workers.

  • Transport via Buses: 257 establishments (7.8% share) employing 30,483 workers.

The sector’s average workforce size scaled up by 2.8%, averaging 74 workers per establishment in 2024. Passenger air transport led this metric with an impressive average of 364 workers per establishment, followed by courier activities (154 workers) and bus transport (119 workers).

The sector’s top three industry groups accounted for the vast majority of financial transactions:

Geographically, economic activity remains concentrated in three major regions:

  • NCR: Led across all metrics, generating PhP 702.31 billion in revenue and spending PhP 636.17 billion.

  • Central Visayas: Secured the second-highest revenue spot at PhP 50.49 billion (5.8% share) and second-highest workforce presence with 25,418 workers.

  • CALABARZON: Placed second in establishment count (380 establishments) and third in revenue generation at PhP 48.63 billion (5.6% share).
