The Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), one of the Philippines’ premier institutions of higher education, has partnered anew with the First Gen group, the country’s leading renewable energy (RE) provider, to source directly from renewable energy the supply of electricity for its campus in Cavite.
Through the expanded partnership finalized in June 2026, the LPU Cavite campus now gets electricity from First Gen’s geothermal power stations in Tongonan, Ormoc City, and Kananga, Leyte.
This brings to four the number of LPU campuses that source geothermal electricity from First Gen through agreements facilitated under the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP) of the Department of Energy.
The shift represents not only an operational upgrade but a deliberate institutional value statement that LPU is serious about preparing its students, faculty, and community for a sustainable future.
“At LPU, we believe that education goes beyond the four walls of the classroom. How we run our institution reflects what we stand for,” said Roberto Laurel, president of LPU campuses in Manila and Cavite. “Partnering with First Gen is our commitment made visible. It is a tangible step toward environmental responsibility that we hope will inspire our students to carry this mindset forward in their own careers and communities.”
Last April, LPU’s flagship campus in Intramuros, Manila, likewise started getting its electricity from First Gen’s geothermal power plants in Ormoc and Kananga.
And in February 2026, LPU forged a partnership with First Gen for supply of geothermal power to LPU’s Batangas and Laguna campuses also under the RAP.
“We are deeply grateful for the trust LPU has placed on us to support their needs to transition to clean energy. It is a privilege to collaborate with institutions like LPU who champion renewable energy solutions and reduce carbon emissions, helping drive meaningful, lasting change not just for today, but for the generations the university is helping shape,” said Carlo Vega, First Gen chief customer engagement officer.
The RAP, one of the Department of Energy’s consumers’ choice programs, allows electricity consumers to combine their total energy demand to reach a certain minimum threshold — now set at 100 kilowatts per month — to qualify as contestable customers with the right to choose their own power suppliers.
Beyond energy savings, the partnership opens the door for meaningful collaboration in sustainability education, research and student engagement. Future initiatives may include curriculum integration, internship opportunities, and campus-wide environmental programs aligned with global sustainability frameworks.
First Gen operates some of the Philippines’ largest renewable energy installations, including geothermal, wind, and solar facilities. With a proven track record in clean renewable energy leadership, the group brings both the infrastructure and the expertise to help LPU achieve its long-term sustainability goals.
LPU is a premier private university with campuses across the Philippines, dedicated to producing globally competitive graduates grounded in excellence, integrity, and service.
Its partnership with First Gen is part of LPU’s broader institutional roadmap to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The alignment reinforces LPU’s role as a socially responsible institution of higher learning.
