Aboitiz InfraCapital advances specialized training for Bohol-Panglao international airport

Team members from Aboitiz InfraCapital Bohol Airport Corporation (ABAC), operator of Bohol–Panglao International Airport (BPIA), recently completed specialized Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) training designed to further strengthen operational readiness, technical capability, and compliance with international aviation standards.

Well-trained Airfield Lighting and Power Technicians help ensure the continuous operation of runway, taxiway, and approach lighting systems that guide aircraft movements throughout the day and night.  For travelers, these systems support reliable airport operations, helping airlines maintain schedules and enabling passengers to move through Bohol’s main gateway with greater confidence, particularly during nighttime operations and periods of reduced visibility.

The training follows a similar initiative recently completed at Laguindingan International Airport by Aboitiz InfraCapital Laguindingan Airport Corporation (ALAC), reflecting AIC Airports’ continued efforts to invest in technical expertise and operational excellence across its growing airport network.

Conducted from June 29 to July 3, 2026, the Airfield Ground Lighting Airside Electrical Safety (AGL1) and Airfield Ground Lighting Maintenance and Compliance (AGL2) training was facilitated by the Airfield Training Company (ATC), an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)-accredited training provider based in Manchester, United Kingdom. The program brought together 25 ABAC personnel, including Airfield Lighting and Power Technicians (ALPTs) and other airport team members involved in the operation and maintenance of airfield systems.

The training aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and technical competencies in the operation, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Airfield Ground Lighting systems. It covered key areas such as airfield lighting principles, electrical safety, preventive and corrective maintenance, fault diagnosis, and industry best practices designed to ensure the reliability and operational readiness of airport lighting infrastructure.

The program supports compliance with international aviation standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), helping ensure that Bohol–Panglao International Airport maintains the technical capabilities required for safe and continuous airport operations. Upon successfully completing the required examinations, participants will receive internationally recognized AGL1 and AGL2 certifications.

Consultations with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the Civil Aviation Training Center (CATC) informed the initiative, underscoring a shared commitment to continuously strengthening technical expertise and operational readiness within the country’s aviation sector.

“For many visitors, Bohol–Panglao International Airport is their first impression of the island. While passengers may not always see the systems operating behind the scenes, they expect a journey that is seamless, dependable, and efficient. Strengthening the capabilities of our technical teams helps us maintain the infrastructure that supports that experience every day,” said Aldwin C. Uy, General Manager of Bohol–Panglao International Airport.

Echoing the importance of sustained investment in aviation capability-building, Atty. Jinky Zaragosa-Ang, Area Manager for Area 7 of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), highlighted the role of specialized technical training in supporting safe and resilient airport operations.

“As passenger volumes continue to grow, maintaining highly capable technical teams becomes increasingly important in ensuring airport infrastructure performs consistently and efficiently. Programs such as these help reinforce the standards and competencies needed to support safe, reliable, and responsive air transport services for the traveling public,” Atty. Ang said.

As Bohol’s primary gateway, Bohol–Panglao International Airport plays an important role in connecting communities, supporting tourism, and enabling economic activity throughout the province. Operated by Aboitiz InfraCapital Bohol Airport Corporation, the airport continues to invest in its people, systems, and operational excellence while working alongside government and industry partners to support safe, reliable, and future-ready airport services for the traveling public.
