The Department of Energy (DOE) has extended its congratulations to the City Government of Makati and its private sector partner, ACEN, following the city’s historic transition to 100% renewable energy.
Under the leadership of Mayor Nancy Binay, Makati City has successfully shifted all its eligible electricity requirements to clean energy sources. This landmark achievement was made possible through the utilization of the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and the Retail Aggregation Program (RAP), frameworks designed to empower end-users to choose their own clean energy suppliers.
With this transition, Makati City cements its place as the first local government unit (LGU) in the Philippines to fully embrace a 100% renewable energy mandate for its eligible facilities.
In her congratulatory message, DOE Secretary Sharon S. Garin highlighted the real-world viability of the clean energy transition, praising the synergy between public administration and private enterprise.
“It proves that the transition to clean energy is no longer a distant aspiration,” Secretary Garin emphasized. “It is practical. It is achievable. And most importantly, it is happening now through the collective leadership of government and the private sector.”
The DOE views Makati City’s successful shift as a blueprint for localized climate action and energy independence. By leveraging existing statutory frameworks like RCOA and RAP, the city has demonstrated that sustainability and urban development can go hand in hand.
Moving forward, the DOE hopes that Makati’s pioneering milestone will serve as a powerful inspiration for other local government units, private businesses, and communities across the archipelago to accelerate their own renewable energy initiatives, ultimately contributing to an energy-secure, sustainable, and prosperous Philippines.
