LANDBANK cards now accepted for contactless fare payments in LRT-2

Building on the successful rollout in MRT-3, commuters can now use their LANDBANK-issued cards for seamless travel on Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), further advancing the national government’s push for a modern, cashless public transport system.

Passengers can simply tap their contactless LANDBANK Visa Debit, Credit, or Mastercard Prepaid cards enabled with PayWave or PayPass at designated LRT-2 turnstiles upon entry and exit, eliminating the need to queue for or reload single-purpose transit cards. The same convenience also extends to the cards of Overseas Filipino Bank (OFBank), a wholly-owned subsidiary of LANDBANK.

This initiative is part of the Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) Proof of Concept (POC) under the Philippine Automated Fare Collection System (PAFCS). Implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in partnership with Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), the project utilizes LANDBANK as the Settlement Bank to enable secure, card-based payments.

The LRT-2 AFCS POC was formally launched through a ceremonial demonstration at the Legarda Station on 13 July 2026, led by Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary and LANDBANK Chairman Frederick D. Go, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda, DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John R. Batan, LRTA Administrator Atty. Hernando T. Cabrera.

Joining them were officials from acquiring bank partner RCBC, headed by President and CEO Reginaldo Anthony B. Cariaso, and EVP and Chief Innovations and Inclusion Officer Angelito M. Villanueva; and partners LANDBANK, led by President and CEO Lynette V. Ortiz, and Visa Philippines, represented by Country Manager Jeffrey Navarro. Also present were Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan, SSS President and CEO Robert Joseph M. de Claro, GCash Vice President Paul Albano, and other key stakeholders.

“Expanding the use of LANDBANK cards for transit payments supports the National Government’s push to modernize public transport and make everyday commuting more efficient,” said LANDBANK President and CEO Ortiz. “Providing commuters with a fast, convenient, and cashless way to pay at LRT-2 helps reduce queues, improves mobility, and brings digital financial services closer to the daily lives of Filipinos.”

By enabling commuters to use globally accepted EMV-enabled cards across major rail systems, this expansion accelerates the country’s digital transformation, reduces cash dependence, and promotes greater financial inclusion.
