MARINA collaborates with IMO to equip NGAs, port authorities to prevent ship waste pollution

To help keep Philippine waters free from ship-generated waste and marine litter, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) strengthened the capacity of government agencies and port authorities to develop and implement effective Port Waste Management Plans (PWMPs) through a two-day workshop recently held at the MARINA Central Office.

The activity, organized by MARINA in partnership with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the IMO-FAO Regional Litter (RegLitter) Project, brought together 35 participants from key national government agencies (NGAs) and port authorities.

By enhancing participants’ knowledge of port waste management planning, the workshop aims to improve the availability and management of port reception facilities, reduce the improper disposal of ship-generated waste, and strengthen the country’s compliance with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

Experts from the IMO led discussions on marine litter prevention, port reception facilities, and the essential components of a Port Waste Management Plan, including waste assessment, collection procedures, implementation strategies, monitoring mechanisms, and continuous improvement.

Participants also examined a case study on the implementation of a Port Waste Management Plan at a port in Manila, providing practical insights that can be adapted by other ports nationwide.
