In line with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to build a modern, high-capacity mass transit network, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) presented their strategic rail pipeline and operational roadmap during the recent SwissCham Philippines Policy-to-Practice Roundtable.
Addressing key private sector stakeholders, infrastructure leaders, and international partners, DOTr Undersecretary for Railways Atty. Timothy John R. Batan detailed the administration’s flagship rail investments. Central to these efforts are mega-projects such as the 147-kilometer North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) System and the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP). Once operational, these systems are projected to significantly cut travel times across Greater Metro Manila and neighboring provinces, drastically reducing the multi-billion-peso daily economic losses attributed to traffic congestion.
Complementing the long-term infrastructure pipeline, PNR General Manager Deovanni S. Miranda highlighted PNR’s operational strategy during this transformative transition phase. GM Miranda emphasized the agency’s focus on service continuity, system interoperability, and stringent safety standards—ensuring that everyday commuters continue to experience reliable mobility even as active construction progresses.
“Our goal is to ensure that while we build the rail network of tomorrow, we maintain accountable, ground-level management today,” GM Miranda noted, reinforcing the commitment to minimize commuter disruption.
Through close collaboration between the DOTr and PNR, the Philippine government is bridging national policy with practical execution—paving the way for safe, efficient, and accessible public transportation for millions of Filipino passengers.
