More domestic shipping companies are embracing the Maritime Industry Authority’s (MARINA) digital transformation program as industry stakeholders in Zamboanga participated in a hands-on workshop on the Maritime Energy Demand Information Analysis Software (MEDIAnS), reinforcing the national government’s drive toward a greener, more energy-efficient maritime sector.
The pledge of support came during a two-day regional users’ training workshop held on July 28–29, organized by the Marine Environment Protection Development Service (MEPDS) in coordination with MARINA Regional Office IX (MARINA 9).
The workshop brought together 27 key industry participants for intensive, practical training covering essential platform functions, including vessel registration, voyage reporting, fuel consumption data entry, energy analytics, and emissions monitoring.
MARINA 9 Regional Director Farida Cunanan emphasized the shifting landscape of domestic shipping, noting that the industry’s strategic priorities now extend beyond traditional maritime safety to encompass energy efficiency, digitalization, environmental protection, and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction.
By collecting and processing real-time operational data, MEDIAnS enables both regulatory bodies and private operators to track fuel consumption patterns and assess vessel performance, driving data-driven decisions for sustainable operations. To date, 51 domestic shipping companies nationwide have formally backed the implementation of the platform.
Developed through a collaborative partnership among MARINA, the University of the Philippines Diliman, and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), MEDIAnS centralizes energy consumption analytics for Philippine-registered domestic vessels to strengthen environmental safeguards and accelerate GHG reduction across the nation’s sea lanes.
