Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno led the inspection of two shipments from China containing misdeclared firecrackers worth approximately ₱40 million at the Bureau of Customs – Manila International Container Port (BOC-MICP).
Two shipments from China, each valued at approximately ₱20 million, were flagged by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) after derogatory reports indicated the presence of fireworks and firecrackers. The first shipment, declared as “shelves,” was voluntarily abandoned by the consignee, while the second shipment was declared as “ceramic cups.”
Upon arrival of both shipments, they underwent Physical Examination which resulted in the discovery of fireworks and firecrackers.
On the discovery of contraband, Commissioner Nepomuceno said,” Kung makikita natin, epektibo ang screening process natin. Iba’t ibang klaseng kontrabando ang nahaharang natin, kaya sana itigil na ng mga smugglers ang illegal na importasyon. Mauubos lang ang puhunan niyo.”
Importation of finished firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices is prohibited under Republic Act no. 7183 in its Implementing Rules and Regulations.
After processing, the firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices will be turned over to the proper government offices for case filing and eventual disposal.
The BOC-MICP, headed by District Collector Atty. Geoffrey K. De Vera IV, continues to intensify its enforcement efforts against the entry of prohibited and misdeclared goods. In support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s whole-of-government campaign against smuggling and economic sabotage, the BOC will continue to strengthen border security and pursue individuals and businesses engaged in illicit trade.
