MARINA, Industry partners break ground for Green Energy Training center

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) joined industry partners in the groundbreaking ceremony of the United Marine Green Energy Center on 17 August 2026.

The Unite Marine Green Energy Center will equip Filipino seafarers with practical, hands-on training on alternative fuels, including LNG, methanol, and ethanol, covering their safe handling, storage, transfer, and bunkering.

As shipping moves toward greener and more sustainable technologies, the center will help seafarers develop the skills and confidence needed to safely operate future-fuelled ships and respond to emerging safety challenges.

During his opening message, UMTC President Antonio Galvez said that the facility will stand as a symbol of commitment to excellence and confidence in the future of the maritime industry. He added that through practical exercises and realistic scenarios, Filipino seafarers will develop the confidence and competence to respond effectively, protect lives, safeguard vessels, protect the environment, and prevent incidents from becoming disasters.

MARINA Administrator Sonia B. Malaluan said the center can serve as a platform for innovation, research, knowledge-sharing, and stronger collaboration among government, industry, training institutions, and technology providers. She added that the initiative will help lay the foundation for the skills and capabilities the maritime industry will need in the years ahead.

The groundbreaking marks another step toward strengthening maritime education and training and preparing competent, future-ready Filipino seafarers for the evolving maritime industry.
